What is InstallFest?
- The InstallFest is an event where ACCEL Consultants will be available to assist you with the installation process throughout the day -- learn how you can use Linux on your PC or Mac without affecting your current Windows/OSX setup!
- The popular Ubuntu Hardy Heron and Fedora 8 distributions will be available on CD/DVD.
- There will be high speed Internet access available for downloading distribution updates and patches.
- There will be information on Open Source Software alternatives to proprietary, non-free software.
- As well as information about areas in which Open Source Software is not currently a viable alternative, and how to cope!
When is InstallFest?
Tuesday, May 6th -- 10AM - 4PM.
Where is InstallFest?
ACCEL Blue Room in the (Carpenter Hall) Engineering Library. Just walk in the library doors and keep going straight until you hit glass doors.
How does one participate in InstallFest?
- Just show up! If you don't have your own computer, or don't currently have enough space for an installation, feel free to show up just to get some information! However, if you
do want to install the operating system on your personal computer, read on. - Back up your personal data (just in case).
- Have about 6GB (minimum) of free space on your hard drive.
- Defragmenting is helpful (if applicable: Vista, XP).
- Bring your personal computer to ACCEL at the aforementioned date (desktops welcome -- we have monitors, power cables, mice, and keyboards for temporary use).
- Be ready to learn about GNU/Linux and Open Source Software alternatives!
Why do we (at ACCEL) put on InstallFest?
- All of us want to share our Linux experience with the community.
- Some of us are proponents of the philosophy of sharing that originally inspired the existence of Open Source Software.
- Some of us are computer science/engineering junkies and can't live without the power, flexibility, and knowledge that Open Source Software allows us.
- Some of us maintain that community-reviewed code bases lead to superior quality software.
- Some of us think that Linux experience looks good on a resume. :)
